Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) preserves a unique heritage that includes scientific instrumental of historical, scientific and technological value. For the last ten years, this organization has initiated an Institutional Plan (ICLIH) for the recuperation of this type of collections. These instruments represent a great issue about their conservation and restoration due to their age, technical singularities and diversity of materials. Therefore, the aim of this work is to analyse the main challenges posed by the conservation of scientific and technical heritage based on experiences developed within the framework of the ICLIH Plan and the National Museum of Natural Sciences (MNCN), proposing criteria and reflections that contribute to the future development of specific protocols. The research focuses on the material complexity of these objects and the intangible dimension associated with their functionality and scientific context, requiring a common consensus among all professionals involved in this heritage, based on new studies and defined conservation-restoration criteria that are essential to ensure its permanence and recognition.
