Hybrid documentation and parametric modelling for the conservation of a modern stained-glass window in Caracas (Venezuela)

Abstract

Este artículo analiza la reconstrucción paramétrica y el estudio estructural de un vitral moderno en la Iglesia de la Santísima Trinidad, Caracas (Venezuela), atribuido al artista Omar Carreño. La pérdida parcial de documentación original y el acceso limitado al sitio motivaron una metodología híbrida que combina investigación archivística, entrevistas, bocetos, mediciones in situ, modelado paramétrico en SolidWorks y visualización mediante realidad aumentada. El flujo de trabajo diferencia fuentes históricas y procedimientos metodológicos.
Objetivo: establecer una secuencia replicable para interpretar geometrías complejas según la lógica constructiva en contextos de documentación deficiente. Hipótesis: la integración de registros históricos incompletos, mediciones en sitio y modelado paramétrico permite generar un gemelo digital geométricamente fiable que apoye la conservación preventiva, la interpretación estructural y la transferencia interdisciplinar de conocimiento. Los resultados confirman la validez del modelado reconstructivo para el patrimonio moderno latinoamericano, ofreciendo un flujo transferible para documentar tipologías arquitectónicas no canónicas con tecnologías accesibles.

Author Biographies

Mariolly Dávila, Department of Graphic and Design Engineering, Catalonia Polytechnic University

Mariolly Dávila Cordido is a lecturer at the Department of Graphic Engineering and Design at the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC). She holds a PhD in Architecture and Visual Communication Design from ETSAB, UPC; a Master’s in Didactics of Secondary Education – Drawing, from the University of Valencia; and a degree in Architecture from the Central University of Venezuela. With over 10 years of international experience in teaching and research, she has taught undergraduate courses in Projects and Graphic Expression, and Graphic Representation in Architecture and Engineering. At the master’s level, she has taught Urban Planning and Territorial Development and contributed to PhD courses in Heritage and Social Development. Her research focuses on architectural space design, digital heritage, and urbanism using tools like classical geometry, 3D visualization, and virtual realities.

Renata de Mendonça Espinheira Gomes, Catalonia Polytechnic University

Renata de Mendonça Espinheira Gomes holds a degree in Architecture from the Faculty of Architecture, University of Lisbon (UL) and a PhD from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), where she works as a lecturer in the Department of Architectural Representation. She teaches on undergraduate and Master courses. She has been invited to give lectures and/or run workshops at universities in Spain, Brazil, France, Italy, and Turkey. She supervises and co-supervises doctoral and Master’s theses. She has published several articles and two books exploring themes related to architecture, drawing, graphic communication and expression, the phenomenology of space, and art. She works with painting, art installations, and sound art, and her work has been exhibited in various countries such as Portugal, Spain, Japan, and Germany. Her artistic practice informs and is informed by her line of research developed within the architectural field.
