What happens when a backboard is sealed in canvas paintings? A study of gaseous contaminants via microenvironmental pH

The perimeter sealing of backing in canvas paintings can promote the accumulation of volatile compounds emitted both by the protective materials and the artwork itself, thereby compromising the chemical stability of the microenvironment. This study evaluates this issue through the analysis of microenvironmental pH in a series of mock-ups constructed with various materials and sealing systems commonly used in conservation. Quantitative measurements of this parameter were carried out using optical pH sensors. The results revealed variations associated with the nature of the tested materials and the degree of airtightness of the sealing system, allowing for an assessment of their influence on contaminant accumulation. In this way, the research provides relevant data to optimize the selection of materials and sealing strategies in this passive preventive conservation measure.
